If advanced warning of an impending disaster is given, and you are forced to evacuate as soon as possible. you need to make an emergency bug out plan. This is why having bug out bags (BOB) and bugout vehicles (BOV) are crucial components of surviving a major calamity, especially if you are an urban dweller and need to flee a soon-to-be living hell. Always have everything ready, including a fully packed BOV and a place to retreat when lawlessness strikes the cities and suburbs.

Short List of Bug Out Vehicle Supplies

Some items that should be included in an urban survival bug out vehicle include:

  •     Maps (if there's not GPS or Mapquest, a paper map will be a lifesaver)
  •     Extra gas containers filled with gas as well as motor oil and brake fluid
  •     Repair manual intended for that particular BOV
  •     All tools necessary to work on the vehicle in case of breakdown
  •     Quilts, blankets, pillows
  •     Foodstuffs, non-perishable and dehydrated food items
  •     Work gloves, a brimmed hat, extra socks
  •     A small bag containing dry kindling and fire starting supplies
  •     Gas-powered chainsaw
  •     Cans of Fix-a-Flat
  •     Luggage racks
Put together bug out bags (BOBs) that contain all other items necessary to survival can quickly be grabbed and packed in the bug out vehicle.

Walking Bug Out Plan

What if you don't have a BOV, and must leave on foot? First, if you think that's even a possibility, you need to make sure you are in physical shape. A 63-year-old woman, who is significantly overweight, never exercises, and has already had a heart attack, is NOT a good candidate for a walking bug out. However, there are options even for that person, such as a BOV alternative like an electric bicycle, moped, or scooter.

If you do have to do a walking bug out, then dress to blend in, keep your hands free, dress in layers, have a head cover, and don't stuff your bug out bag. If there are hostiles you need to avoid, the move when they are more apt to be sleeping. Moving in dark is great, but if the hostiles are more active at night, then leave during the day. Scope out your escape route in advance; identify alleys, alternate side roads, and possible temporary hiding places.

Do NOT look like a victim. Dress and walk mean, like you are on a mission and not to be messed with. Then carry some type of weapon, if you can.
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

A Bug Out Group

Part of a bug out plan should include discussing possibilities with like-minded family and friends. Come up with a place to meet up, a way to communicate or decide what will be the signal or trigger the need to leave.

Coordinate supplies so that the basic necessities will be covered. After all, how many folding shovels does a small group need?Then again, while not everyone in a group needs to bring a tent or axe, if the group breaks up or someone doesn't show up to the start-off location, you could be left missing some important bug out supplies.

While there are some advantages to a group bug out as far as protection in numbers...it's also harder to be stealthy in a group. Chances are that the best group will be where several members have some type of military experience. A group of soft armchair survivalists are going to be a tempting target to those looking for victims.

So really look at your own abilities, the abilities and knowledge of anyone you are considering joining with. For some, going it alone may be better as a group is probably going to move slower than a single person can go, since a group can only move as fast as the slowest.
While few people actually consider how quickly an urban setting would deteriorate following a disaster, realizing the plausible possibility of such an event should be reason enough for urban dwellers to begin sharpening urban survival skills and practice preventative measures that may mean the difference between surviving or dying from any type of disaster situation.
