No volcano is really dead...it's just a sleeping giant that can awaken at any moment.

Is a large volcanic eruption going to be the way the world ends? Many scientists believe that the earth is headed for a major historical event that will be the end of the world as we know it. This catastrophic event will either be a major earthquake that will sink or split a current land mass, or a major volcanic eruption that may bring about another ice age. Such a volcanic event could mean the possible extinction of hundreds of species and possibly the end of humanity. When confronted with this grim outlook on the future it makes the Indonesian Tsunami look like a hick up.

Most people are not aware of the fact that the human race was almost wiped out about a hundred thousand years ago by a major volcanic eruption in Indonesia. This eruption caused the extinction of several animals, such as mammoths, saber tooth tigers, Loch-Ness-monster-type sea creatures. It also spelled the end to Neanderthal.

In the event of a super volcano eruption, perhaps of the Yellowstone caldera, the entire Western Hemisphere (minus the extreme southern tip of South America) would be under a thick blanket of smoke and debris that would last for 15 years. The rest of the world, Europe, Asia, Africa would receive this deadly cloud within hours of the eruption and within a week the entire world would be engulfed.

Within months almost all vegetation would die off, followed by grazing animals that eat it, followed by the carnivorous animals that eat them. In the seas, fish would die in record numbers as the PH level of the water changed to the point that the water basically turned into acid.

In the event of a super volcano eruption all humanity not living under ground, in a bunker or silo, would be killed off within the first 4-5 years following the eruption. The effects of a super volcano would last for 500-1,000 years and would end only after the conclusion of a nuclear-winter-like ice age.

There have been several reports in the last few years of rumblings around various volcanoes in the United States. Yellowstone is also reporting a bulging of the caldera as the ground is being pushed upwards. Back in 2003 or 2004, when I was living in New Mexico, there was some buzz about people finding that the water in their wells had actually turned to acid, an indication of possible volcanic activity.

Here’s just a brief look at the various volcanic eruptions or activity around the world in the month of June 2008:

13th-20th - Shiveluch, Russia
14th-20th - West Indies
15th-18th - Gorely, Kamchatka, Russia
15th-18th - Mutnovsky, Kamchatka, Russia
16th-17th - Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
18th-20th - Fuego, Guatemala
18th-20th - Karymsky, Russia
18th-24th - Kilauea, Hawaii, USA
18th-24th - Pacaya, Guatemala
19th-24th - Santa Maria, Guatemala

….and so on…

The activities ranged from lava flow, eruptions of gas, dust and ash, incandescence and evidence of dome expansions. As you can see there is an active volcano in almost every area around the world. In you live in an area where there is volcanic activity you need to be prepared to leave at a moment's notice should there be an unexpected volcanic eruption.
