The Will to Survive

The Will to Survive

A lot of times survival is just a matter of attitude

mushroomcloudThe first item needed for survival will be the will to survive. Survival really does begin in the head. If you think you are going to die, then you probably will. However, if you determine in advance that no matter what happens you will survive, then you will have a much better chance of making it.

Remember though, should the disaster be short-term, you are going to have to live with the survival actions you took in the midst of the disaster, and post-survival public scrutiny can be harsh. Just ask those young men who survived the 1972 plane crash in the snow-covered Andes where the will to survive caused them to resort to cannibalism.

Prepare Now to Survive

After deciding that you intend to survive, there are steps you can take now to prepare. For instance, should there be a loss of power, how are you going to cook, have light or get water? Considering your location, would solar-power be a logical solution? There are also fuel-powered generators that would run everything in your house provided the power outage was only temporary.

Do you need to consider building an underground shelter in your back yard or in the basement of your home? What types of food and water supplies should you collect? Should you have a weapon or weapons? What types are disaster scenarios might necessitate an evacuation of the area?

These are all questions we will attempt to help you answer for yourself. It would be very easy to say “you must do such and such”, however in any survival situation you must be able to think for yourself.

In an extreme survival situation, it's every man for himself (or woman). Therefore your survival starts right now, with being able to make informed decisions.

You need to take time now to decide if you have the will to survive. Imagine the very worst disaster situation, and then take a good hard look inside of yourself. Do you have what it takes to survive in that situation? Do you have the will to survive?
