Standing on the edge of devastating disaster and wondering how soon the edge will give way

America is teetering on the edge of disaster according to many experts who monitor national threat levels. In fact, security expert Stephen Flynn, who authored a book by the same title, the United States is “largely unprepared” to face a widespread disaster of any type.

What is the federal government saying? Just a quick look at the FEMA website www.ready.gov, will reveal that they are urging Americans to “resolve to be ready in 2008” and to “prepare for emergencies before they happen.” Does that sound like a government who plans to come to the immediate rescue of its citizens in the event of a wide-spread disaster?

The Edge of Disaster

If we are on the edge of disaster, exactly what disaster types could we be facing? In addition to natural disasters such as the “Big One”, the earthquake that’s predicted to send Southern California into the Pacific, there are terrorist attacks being planned by our enemies that are believed will put 9/11 in the shade.

Additionally, experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are predicting another outbreak of influenza on a scale to rival the Spanish Flu pandemic of the early 1900’s. In fact, not only are they keeping alert for bird flu cases, but are also watching for MRSA, SARS and other deadly viral outbreaks. In addition to naturally spread and induced viruses and bacteria, there is the continual threat of a rogue terrorist group employing some kind of mutated biological weapon for which the world --and the U.S.-- is totally unprepared.

Speaking of threats from terrorists, Mr. Flynn points out how vulnerable shipping ports are both on the east and west coasts. A well-planned large-scale attack in the LA port or Boston port could shut down the coast and bring the entire area “to its knees”.

Then there is America’s standing as a financial giant in the world’s economy. Unfortunately at the beginning of 2008 the dollar is in freefall to the point that India is refusing to accept U.S. dollars, insisting on rupees instead. For the 2007 Christmas season, Canadians were streaming across the borders to buy stuff in the U.S. because for once the Canadian dollar was stronger than the U.S. dollar. According to news reports in early January 2008, America is facing a recession that could lead to massive unemployment, as well as a further drop in housing prices.

The edge of disaster for the United States may also be a result of America’s dealings with the rest of the world. Wars, police actions, and policies that are perceived by other nations as being invasive and threatening to their own sovereignty have contributed to a widespread perception of the U.S. as being a bully. Just like in the school yard, if enough of the “little guys” join together they can “take out” the bully.

The only question now is: Given how close to the edge of disaster we are, when will the edge give way? While that may sound scary, anyone who is reading this has an advantage and that is that you are being educated. You may still have time to get prepared, especially if you stop frivolous spending and start stocking up on emergency disaster supplies. NOW!

On Disaster's Edge

If you thought that only wild-eyed rednecks were into survivalism, then you need to know that even the federal government if telling its citizens to get ready.
What types of disaster pose a possible threat to your way of life? They range from natural disasters to manmade disasters; unfortunately it's often the manmade disasters that have the potential of being the most diasterous.
There are just things you need to know as you acknowledge that there's a very real possibility that at some point in your life your world may be turned upside down through no fault of your own. You also realize that you need to start now to do what you can to get ready.
