Different animals require different types of traps or snares. Observe the area to find out what kind of creatures are running around there. That means you need to know a little about what to look for.

  2. Animal or bird tracks
  3. Scat or droppings
  4. Burrows, nests or bedding sites
  5. Watering holes and feeding grounds

To effectively use survival traps you need to stay as inconspicuous as possible, not only so that you don’t scare the prey, but that you avoid being observed by other folks who might not be friendly.

  1. Conceal your trap or snare
  2. Prepare the trap or snare away from where you intend to use them
  3. Avoid using fresh cut vegetation, the animal can smell the sap
  4. Mask any human scent left on the trap.
  5. Construct a channel that forces the prey to enter the trap
  6. Bait the trap for the type of prey you want and with something not easily obtained outside of the trap. Give away a few samples to give your prey a taste and they will then be more apt to enter your trap.

Probably the most important thing to have for survival traps is the right mindset. This is especially true if you are a city dweller and have only ever eaten meat purchased from the supermarket that was displayed on clean Styrofoam trays and wrapped in clear plastic wrap. If that describes you then I’m here to tell you that if you don’t want to starve, you are going to have to wrap your mind around the fact that just about anything that doesn’t eat you first may save you from starvation…if you can catch it.

ratFor you folks who worship little critters and who in your comfortable, sanitized world, break down and cry at the thought of someone using a “snap” trap to catch rodents, then you are in for a real rude awakening. In a survival situation, where you are facing starvation, it may come down to a case of “eat or be eaten”. Then knowing how to construct survival traps may be what saves you and your family.

Don’t just think that because you live in the US that you are safe from ever facing the kind of starvation and famine often seen in other countries. In fact, based on projections by those who watch the economy, we might be closer than you think to a time when the knowledge of how to use survival traps may be all that stands between you and starvation.
