The space blanket is to survival today what the wool blanket was to survival in the settling of America. Wool blankets were the best protection against the biting cold of the blizzards that could cover the Great Plains. They were warm and retained that warmth even when wet. However, they were also heavy and cumbersome.

Today, the space blanket far surpasses the life-saving benefits of the blankets of wool. While they are not comfy-cozy, the ability to reflect back one’s own body heat makes them vital in a winter survival situation.

Advantages of the Space Blanket

  • Lightweight
  • Compact
  • Waterproof
  • Windproof
  • Sunshade
  • Signal Mirror

These survival blankets are so lightweight, it makes them the perfect choice for backpackers and hikers. Folded they are only about the size of a pack of cigarettes, fitting easily into a pocket, fanny pack or bug out bag.

Another advantage of the space-age survival blanket is that they are waterproof. While a wool blanket could still provide warmth when it was wet, there’s nothing comfortable about wrapping yourself in a cold, wet blanket. On the other hand, if you’re wet, a reflective waterproof blanket will help your body to retain its heat.

It is the ability of this reflective but lightweight material that makes it ideal for use as blankets, tarps and even sleeping bags. It is also one of the reasons why the survival blanket is the choice of campers, hikers, ice fishing and other outdoor enthusiasts. They are also used by emergency medical personnel, relief agencies, police and military units, as well as search and rescue organizations world wide.

Space blankets can be used for more than just keeping warm. The reflective surface can be used to signal for help, as a wind break, as a shade from the sun and to build an emergency shelter. In fact, the Rule of Threes for survival, places shelter first in importance.

Survival Disaster Rules of Three

  1. Shelter
  2. Water
  3. Food

While one can survive 3 weeks without food and 3 days without water, in adverse environmental conditions one can only survive 3 hours! That is why a reflective solar, emergency or space blanket should be the first…the absolute FIRST item on your list of survival gear. In fact, they are also so inexpensive as to be purchased in bulk and used for fishing, hiking, sports games, picnics and kept in the glove box of every vehicle you own.

Do not allow yourself to be caught without shelter. Make sure you have an emergency space blanket for each person in your family.
