One topic buzzing around the various online survival and preparedness groups is “peak oil.” A brief explanation of peak oil is when oil production reaches its maximum rate and begins to decline. This will result in fuel shortages and drastic increases in prices.

While we can all agree that gas prices are going up and that that in turn affects the cost of food and other items delivered by truck, we need to also understand that it impacts every area of modern life. For instance, home heating costs will go up as home heating oil and natural gas prices increase. In addition, every type of agricultural and manufacturing industry will come to a grinding halt without oil.

Many believe that peak oil will see wars increase as countries fight for the right to the limited available fuel. On the home front, unemployment will rise, resulting in more homelessness and crime. The obvious government response to the resulting protests and riots will be martial law.

While most agree with the need to prepare for peak oil and the aftermath, most of the advice concerns the necessity of getting a vehicle that uses something besides fossil fuels and using wind and solar power for electricity. What can you or I as an individual do to prepare for peak oil survival?

Here’s just a brief list of suggestions and ideas of how to prepare for peak oil:

  1. Change to solar cells, wind turbines and batteries to provide power to our home.
  2. Build homes that are at least partially underground to reduce the need for heating and cooling.
  3. Learn to garden, investing in heirloom seeds that will reproduce after their own kind.
  4. Learn to raise small meat animals such as rabbits, chickens, goats and pigs; or small container fish farming.
  5. Learn skills such as raising worms, bee keeping, basket weaving, canning and rope making.
  6. Learn about medicinal plants and herbs, and how to prepare salves, tinctures and potions.
  7. Investigate other types of mobility: bikes, horse cart, goat cart, and dog-powered sleds or wheeled carts.

However, you choose to prepare for peak oil, just know that your preparations will come in handy for any number of survival preparedness situations. Most experts believe that the results of peak oil won’t manifest for another 20 years, however there are a number of natural and manmade disasters that are ongoing threats. Any of the suggestions above can be employed in preparing for any type of emergency and disaster survival scenario.
