It is possible to survive exposure to radioactive iodine

Potassium iodine, (aka Potassium iodide) (KI) is not something that most people have in their survival medical kit, and there are two basic reasons for this lack of vital preparedness. First, many people have never heard that they need it; they are uninformed. Others don’t think that there could be a nuclear incident that would affect them; they are the unbelieving.

The information is this article is for the first group of people, the uninformed. Not to get all technical, but here’s a brief explanation in layman’s terms of why potassium iodine is a vital addition to your survival preps.

Who Needs Potassium Iodine

Every person; male, female, young, old, and even infants are at risk for exposure to radioactive iodine, if:

  • They live downwind of a nuclear power plant
  • Nuclear waste is moved by truck or railroad car through their town
  • A "dirty bomb" leaking radioactivity were to be used by terrorists
  • Nuclear missles strike as part of nuclear war

A nuclear event, no matter the cause, may release radioactive iodine (radioiodines) into the atmosphere. These radioiodines can be inhaled or ingested through contaminated locally-grown meat, dairy and produce; and is called “internal contamination. When internal contamination occurs the radioiodines are quickly absorbed by and proceed to decimate the thyroid gland.

Studies have proven that potassium iodine/iodide is the best way to protect the body from the harmful effects of radioiodines. According to the FDA in the December 15, 1978 issue of the Federal Register, potassium iodine “is a safe and effective means by which to block uptake of radioiodines by the thyroid gland in a radiation emergency under certain specified conditions of use.” This is because iodine is to the thyroid as iron filings are to a magnet; immediately attracted. Therefore the potassium iodine fills up the thyroid thus preventing the absorption of radioactive iodines.

Therefore ingesting potassium iodine immediately before or during the passage of a radioactive cloud prevents the thyroid from absorbing the radioiodines and protects it from harm. There is some evidence that even a delayed dosage of potassium iodine may have benefits if the radioactivity released is slow and drawn out. Either way, swallowing potassium iodine can help prevent hypothyroidism and even thyroid cancer, with all the resulting problems associated with impaired or lost thyroid function.

For information about dosing with KI visit the CDC website.

What Happens Without KI

Most people don’t understand just how vital a healthy, functioning thyroid is to their physical, mental and emotional health. As anyone with thyroid problems will tell you, almost every system of the body is influenced by the thyroid. Without potassium iodine the radioiodines would result in either compromised thyroid function or total destruction or cancer of the thyroid. Below is just a very brief list of many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism:

  • Hair loss
  • Low body temperature
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Obesity
  • Inabiltiy to lose weight
  • Lack of energy
  • Foggy thinking
  • Edema
  • Osteoporosis
  • High cholesterol
  • Depression
  • Joint pain
  • Dry skin
  • High blood pressure
  • Plantar fasciitis

While dry skin or hair loss, might not be an issue in a survival situation, high blood pressure, joint pain, high cholesterol and other side-effects of hypothyroidism could definitely be a factor. For instance, in a walking bug out, painful feet caused by plantar fasciitis would make walking absolutely impossible.

It is therefore vital that every bug out bag, survival kit and homestead have an adequate supply of potassium iodine. In a disaster situation in which a nuclear incident has occurred, survival will be hard enough without the added problems associated with a dysfunctional thyroid.

Everyone is at risk. It is up to you to reduce the risk for your family
