Portable water purifiers come in all shapes and sizes, degrees of effectiveness and price ranges. But don’t let the word “portable” throw you off. Whether you are preparing to hunker down in your homestead or bugout to a remote location, clean drinking water will be a priority.

While water can be boiled, treated with water purification tables or filtered, the ability run the water through a water purifier in still the best option. For instance, water filter has a micron rating of 1.0 to 4.0 and remove some bacteria, large protozoa and Giardia. Unfortunately it does not remove microorganisms and viruses.

Water Filter or Purifier

There's a big difference between what water filters, microfilters or water purifiers do. The main differences being the microorganisms and contaminants eliminated, as well as the microbiological micron rating (MMR). Think of the MMR as the size of the openings in a screen; the bigger the holes the more that can get through.

MMR Differences

  • Water Filters - 1.0 to 4.0
  • Microfilters - .3 to 1.0
  • Purifiers - .018

Simple water filters will remove common Giardia, as well as other large protozoa and some bacteria. However, there are still a lot of microorganisms that can get through and make someone very sick.

Microfilters will remove most microorganisms, as well as protozoa and bacteria. Since it doesn’t purify the water and remove viruses, the EPA still recommends that some type of approved disinfectant be used in conjunction with a microfilter.

Water purifiers will remove all microorganisms and viruses from the water and is the best way to ensure quality drinking water. When boiling is not possible, water purification is the only guarantee that you won’t be brought down with some water-born illness.

Water filters, no matter expensive and fancy, cannot remove every possible threat to your family’s health. Unfortunately, until recently, water purifiers were limited to large, bulky contrivances, where water filters had evolved into small, portable devices, like the water filter straw.

Water purifiers eliminate the need to carry water

Thankfully the era of the portable water purifier has arrived. There are now water purifiers that weigh less that 8 ounces and look like sports water bottles. These are ideal for carrying in a backpack or bug out bag.

With water contaminates swirling in the purest-looking mountain streams and rivers, you cannot afford to ignore the need for a portable water purifier. This will become more important than ever in the event of a total breakdown in society where people are forced to flee the cities.Just because you know not to flush where you drink, those unprepared refugees might not know or care. Since you don’t know what is going into the creek upstream from you, having a portable water purifier could be a real life saver.
