Deciduous forest flora consists of flowering plants and ferns

There are ground-level plants as well as under story plants and canopy plants. If you were stranded in the woods, you would look for the plants in deciduous forests that are edible plants. You might find some plants that you are unsure and then you would need to test the plant for edibility.

Many plants in deciduous forests feed the raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks and many different species of birds as well as other animals. One way to determine if the plants in deciduous forest are edible, besides tasting, is to carry a handbook with you in your outdoor survival kit . This will help you distinguish between poisonous and wild edible plants.

ladyfern

The lady fern plants in deciduous forest grow wild and the roots can be ground to dust and then added to water. This plant, which grows in the under story of the forest, is used as a healing remedy, but can also be used to sooth aches and pains.

Note: overdoses of lady ferns can cause weakness and in some severe cases, blindness.

mushroomsWhen you are looking for other plants in deciduous forests that are edible, the puffball mushroom is a perfect example and can be found in almost every forest. You can eat the mushroom, which has a firm white inside. Again, a good manual with color photos will come in handy so that you can make sure you are eating the right kind of mushroom, as some are deadly.

The edible plants in deciduous forests need to be inspected before eating for any kind of bugs. When you test a plant for edibility, you need to take a very tiny nibble to ensure you have a taste. However, do not swallow, instead spit it out. Now wait to see if you feel any adverse affects, such as tingling, numbness, bitterness, excessive watering of the mouth. If any of those symptoms appear, that plant goes on the “do not eat” list.

Birds are a good indication of what plants are edible.

Forest plants can confuse the average hiker. More experienced hikers know the difference between the poisonous plants and edible plants. That is why it you should carry a survival handbook with pictures to compare plants .

beechAnother deciduous forest plant worth mentioning is the American Beech which has nuts that fall to the ground and are edible for both animals as well as humans. The nuts are nutritious and can provide protein that you will need to survive if you are lost in the forest.

shagbarkThe Shagbark hickory is another nut-producing tree in the wilderness. The flowers grow in clusters on these plants in deciduous forest and the nuts fall to the ground floor when ready to eat. The nuts are another way to obtain protein to survive the forest. Once you make your way through the husk, you will have sweet tasting flavor.
