Preventing the spread of a pandemic is a lot about common sense.

Avaian flu prevention as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) is primarily concerned with preventing transmission of the avian bird flu virus from birds to humans. However, there have been a few, unconfirmed cases of transmission of the virus between humans.

One of the best documented cases of possible human-to-human transmission occurred in Vietnam between two sisters. They were part of a family afflicted by the disease that appeared in the form of an extreme respiratory infection. A follow-up investigation could not eliminate direct human-to-human transmission nor confirm infection by bird-to-human contact.

Pandemic Prevention

Human-to-human transmission of regular influenza is believed to be facilitated by respiratory drops created by coughing and sneezing. But since the exact mode of avian influenza human-to-human transmission is unknown, extra precautions have been issued to health care workers.

They are advised to wear face masks and practice hand hygiene during contact with patients or items that might be contaminated by respiratory droplets. Further, it is recommended that they observe full glove and gown protocol. Additionally, only equipment such as stethoscopes, disposable thermometers, etc., that can be dedicated should be used. Pandemic prevention still starts with the basics

Goggles, face shields or other type of eye protection should be worn anytime a health worker comes within three feet of the patient. Additionally airborne precautions should be followed by placing the patient in an airborne isolation room (AIR).

Keeping in mind these pandemic precautions, those who are practicing survival preparedness should add a few items to their preparations. Most people aren’t going to have the ability to isolate the sick in a room designed with airlock, HEPA air filter or portable respirator.

However it is possible to obtain an N-95 filtering (disposable) respirator. That should definitely be added to your preps for pandemic prevention.

Here’s a list of other items that may prove useful for pandemic prevention or at least slowing the spread of infection.

  • Disposable face masks
  • Large bandanas (used as face masks, washed and sterilized between uses)
  • Latex gloves
  • Mentholated rub (i.e. Vicks Vaporub) (uses Eucalyptus and menthol which are both anti-viral and can be rubbed on the face mask to strengthen the shield provided by the mask)
  • Rubbing alcohol and bleach and other disinfecting and sterilizing supplies

The best pandemic prevention is to avoid contact with infected humans in the first place. Therefore, for those who have reached their survival retreat, they will need to exercise extreme caution when coming in contact with outsiders or refugees following a widespread outbreak.
