I have been interested in survivalism for many years and have grown old waiting for the "balloon to go up"
I have read many posts on line and have discovered that the "best" firearms to have in a survival situation are the ones you have. This may sound silly but it is a fact most people feel that the guns they have are the "best"
I am amazed that people seem unable to be objective about this subject.
My favorite handgun of all time is the 1911-A1 .45 ACP. However this would not be my first choice in a SHTF situation.
If I were to feel it necessary to have a defense handgun it would have to be a 9mm pistol. The .45 ACP cartridge is 60% heavier than the 9mm. 100 .45 ACP rounds weighs about 4.7 lbs. That much 9mm ammo would equal about 160 rounds.
The same reasoning applies to center fire rifle ammunition. 762 x 39 ammo weighs about 40% more than .223 (5.56 x 45) Ergo the weight of 100 762 x 39 equals about 140 .223 rounds.
As too which weapons I'd use in these chamberings I have a Beretta 9mm pistol and a Ruger mini 14 rifle. Are they the best choices in those calibers??? Since I can't afford to replace them, of course they're the best.
I've not forgotten the lowly .22LR or the great 12 ga shotgun. If one of my kids is around to help carry, the .22 and 12 ga will certainly be included in my arsenal.
Again the weapons I have on hand are the "best" and just happen to be an old Ruger standard and a Henry survival rifle both in .22 LR and for the 12 ga I have a Rem. 870.
Now, I happen to think my firearms are great for the subject we are discussing. Are there better? probably but mine are still the "best"

Thanks for listening.
