Bug Out First Aid Kits It's Just a Matter of Time #2 in the Rule of 3
Being prepared and having a hurricane survival kit ready at a moment’s notice can be the difference between life and death. By being prepared in advance, all the lines in crowded grocery stores and home supply stores can be avoided.
Survival items should maintain their integrity and be stored in a large covered container that can be moved easily when the time comes. Items can also be stored in backpacks or duffle bags. Nitro-Pak WaterThe National Hurricane Survival Initiative has a list of six items that should be in a hurricane survival kit. The first is water stored in plastic containers or water jugs. Do not use breakable containers or any type that break down over time, this can result in the loss of the water. Survival kits should be able to sustain a person for at least three days or 72 hours and there should be at least one gallon of water per person per day available. Water & Purification FoodThe next item on the list is food. Again, these items are to be stored so non-perishable food should be purchased. Nitro-Pak has a variety of options including freeze-dried ice cream. Another option is to select foods that do not need to be refrigerated, cooked or need water. Since these items may need to be moved in a hurry, they should be lightweight and compact. Make sure to include staples like spices, salt and sugar. A quality pack should also include ready to eat canned foods such as tuna, or other canned meats, and dried fruits and vegetables. First AidBe sure to have first aid items available in case they are necessary. Nitro-Pak has a “Group Outfitter” Outdoorsman First-Aid Kit
ToolsCertain tools and supplies should be included in the emergency survival kit. Examples of these are flashlights and batteries (better yet, a hand-cranked flashlight/radio combo Personal ItemsEvery duffle bag or container used as your hurricane survival kit should have toilet paper, soap for dishwashing and personal hygiene, any feminine supplies, chlorine bleach and plastic garbage bags. Each person should also have a complete change of clothes including footwear. The pack should include rain gear, blankets, sturdy shoes and anything extra for infants, children and the elderly. Another important set of items to pack are any family records, such as birth, marriage or death certificates. |
