Get Out While the Gettin's Good!

If you’re like me, your first response is “get out!” Unfortunately, not everyone will have the option of leaving. For those people, they are going to need to learn about extreme urban survival, and the necessities of survival.

Urban survival in a cataclysmic disaster will be downright perilous. The term “urban jungle” is very appropriate for almost any large city in the U.S. High crime, lawless gangs, poverty and cramped living conditions make surviving under “normal” circumstances extremely difficult.

During the flu pandemic of 1918-1920 populations of entire towns were wiped out.

Throw in a catastrophic natural disaster or a wide-spread attack on our country by some rogue nation or terrorist group using a weapon of mass destruction, and urban survival would go from “difficult” to nigh impossible. No matter how much preparation has been made, any situation that results in death in massive numbers, will turn any urban area into a “hot zone” if for no other reason than the smell.

The Ideal Survival Location is Outside of the City

Nevertheless, there are things that you can do to ensure you and your family’s survival in an urban situation. Most of these ideas are based on the assumption that you are operating on a budget. If you had plenty of money and were considering survival, you’d make sure you had a place outside of the city to retreat to.

For those who don’t have a country retreat, food, water, power and safety will become a priority.

The first item you will need in an extreme urban survival situation is the will to survive. The greatest survival tool you can have is a sharp mind, an understanding that life as you knew it may never be again, and the willingness to bend.
