Emergency Food Supply

Don't panic, yet. There's still time to prepare...you hope

An emergency food supply is a must for every home and family. Because one never knows what kind of emergency or disaster could force evacuation from the premises, readiness is even something the U.S. Government is promoting. Part of that readiness is having some type of emergency food ration on hand.

In the event of a forced evacuation of your home, you probably won’t have the ability to carry a lot of weight. You may also be limited in how much weight you can take with you or how much bulk you can have. While you may be going to a shelter, it can sometimes take hours and even days for relief agencies to get set up. Therefore you need to be prepared.

Emergency Food Rations are a Must

The perfect emergency food supply is going to be one that has enough calories and nutrients to be able to keep you alive. It must also have a long shelf-life, be able to withstand extreme temperatures without losing nutritional value, and be compact and lightweight. Lastly the best survival food is NOT going to require cooking or water.

For an emergency food supply for my bug out bag, backpack and car emergency kit I like the emergency food bars commonly include in commercially-sold emergency survival kits. They contain 200 calories per bar, with a ration of 3 per day for survival. The best brands I have found are the Datrex Emergency Food Bars and the Mainstay Emergency Food Cookie Rations. The calorie count and nutritional values are comparable as is the price; the only real difference I’ve found is the flavor.

A Taste Sure to Please

The Mainstay Emergency Food Rations taste like a lemony-vanilla flavored cookie dough. I also really like the Datrex Food Ration Bars. They have a light coconut flavor and taste like a crunchy cookie. Since the prices are the same, I like to keep a couple of each in all of my emergency disaster kits.

As an emergency food supply these emergency food bars are ideal. Designed and packaged to withstand extreme weather conditions, it is one reason they are included in life rafts and other emergency kits. They’ve proven to be so practical and reliable that they are approved not only by the U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian Coast Guard, but also approved by the EC World Coast Guard for their lifeboats. The Mainstay ration bars also have been approved by the Department of Defense for meeting their stringent guidelines.

Both the Mainstay and the Datrex bars are non-thirst provoking, meaning you’re not going to need water to wash them down. It is the limited protein value that keeps these bars from making you thirsty, since protein requires water for digestion. Despite the low protein content, each bar contains levels of vitamins and minerals that far exceed the RDA requirement.

Another plus to the Mainstay bars is that they are KOSHER approved. They also meet the requirements for Halal. So don’t let KOSHER restrictions keep you from having an emergency food supply in your go bag.

If you are looking for an emergency food supply for your home or retreat, then freeze dried food are going to be your best choice.
