A good place to start...

A brief comment. As I stated in my last commentary, one should always start with water capture and storage for a lot of reasons. Second is food prep. One easy idea is to simply buy a 50 lb bag of rice at Costco each month. They are only around 15.00 per bag. Buy as many at a time as you can afford. It will store for 20 years and is an excellent base to food storage. Black eyed peas would be a great second dried bean item. Nutritious and quick to cook. 8 ounces of rice and blackeyed peas a day will sustain a normal healthy person. Be sure to buy Par Boiled Rice, Costco has it. Par boiled rice is as nutritious as brown rice, is already half cooked and stores really well. Do not buy brown rice. It will spoil in 6 months. Rice will be a valuable food source and a valuable trading commodity. You cannot possibly have to much rice and blackeyed peas. A solar oven can cook both these at one time same oven in around 35 minutes depending on the position of the sun and time of the year. Buy a Solar Oven, I have 5. 2 to cook with, 3 to trade. These are simple things to do right now. I am a Solar oven dealer but you can buy from anyone you like. Yes, they do work, very well, quickly, and you can cook anything, I mean anything quickly. From zero to 415 degrees in around 10 minutes depending on the angle of the sun and time of year. Prepare now! Things are cheap right now, buy all you can!! Did you know that this week in Norway butter is 32.00 a pound and rising ( 12-17-11 )Yep, it can happen here too. Your 14.00 bag of rice could easily be worth a hundred dollars or more in trade some day. Buy rice every time you can. Prepare or perish... Good Day.
